“China’s literati,”Tan wrote, “have always aspired to self-improvement and to guiding their country toward peace and prosperity, but ultimately they’ve never been anything more than subjects, commoners, and slaves.”

I understood Mr. Zhou’s dilemma. Of course he wanted to clarify the events. But he also wanted to live a life. He had ambitions. He had a family. It wasn’t as simple as the usual clichés one sometimes hears, such as life must go on, or people should forget the past. He had to deal with the reality that the same party was still in power. They had appointed him to the commission. They issued business licenses. They decided if your child went to university.
Most of the people we talked to during our visit had been reticent to discuss those days. They often described it as pointless—the Communist Party still rules China, and the topic was off-limits. One woman, a victim of a gang rape by the killers of her family, even bluntly told Mr. Tan that his quest to write this history was pointless. As for the next generation, they were ambivalent. Some welcomed Tan as a bringer of truth, but many others wanted to forget the past—they had lives to live and hopes of their children going to university, buying a home, or traveling abroad. The suffering somehow cheapened this world of newfound prosperity, a reminder that it was built on violence. Few wanted to hear about it.

Alexei Yurchak’s Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation一样推荐这本书,它有些颠覆性……
